There are several amazing aspects to this lofted penthouse in Stockholm, which we found on realty website Per Jansson. For one thing, it’s not what you would call a big home, as its surface only comes in at a mere 57 square meters—that’s less than 30 square meters per level. For another thing, you wouldn’t know it was that small just by looking at it. How is that possible? If your home is approximately the same size, yet looks and feels cluttered and cramped, think about what the owners of this home are doing right and why you are doing poorly on the same counts. For one thing, there is a definite trend for ascension within the slanted walls of this home. The tone is set by the floating staircase with a steep incline and a cleverly concealed storage space included. For another, the decorative items are sparse, reduced to the bare essentials. It’s worth mentioning here that the apartment is the very first project completed by one-man local design outfit Måns Malmborg, who developed the entire project, from concept to fruition, for his family.

The main pieces are sleek and yet not excessively contemporary. Their timeless feel is enhanced by the completely open plan on the bottom floor. Kitchen, dining room, reading corner and day area all combine into a single space, which is at once vintage (check out the work desk) and contemporary (look at the streamlined cabinet and appliance arrangement in the kitchen). Meanwhile, the upper floor features nothing more than a bed, two innovative and unusual light fixtures, plus a priceless view over the city. The overall feel of the home, plus the view, make this place look like it could be anywhere. To paraphrase a famous refrain, “it could be Rotterdam or anywhere,” Manhattan or Paris—anywhere urban, young, fresh and dynamic. All photos taken by Andreas Lind.
