Press outlets have heaped praise in spades on the renovated Grand Hotel Central, with The Guardian calling it “one of the five best European new hip hotels.” It’s quite the calling card, not to mention the history that this luxury establishment, built in the ‘20s, must have borne witness to. But it’s been spruced up since then, of course, with ultra-modern design touches, and now, almost a century after breaking ground, the hotel still looks intent on not letting the glitterati types down. Today’s jet-set traveller is welcome to a holiday stint, a pamper-filled day at the Wellness Suite or a comfy lie-in in a “superbly soundproofed” room (as reviewed by The Independent on Sunday).

Sited in the capital city of Catalonia, at the very hub of Barcelona, the hotel boasts an impressive number of rooms, 147 in total, and an infinity pool on its roof top that lures you in with the promise of swimming up to the very horizon… Lying beyond, flanking the hotel, are the city’s well-known monuments, like the Barcelona Cathedral, as well as the Gothic district. By the time you’ve swum up to take in the panoramic views though, a cruel dilemma rears its horns: I for one would find it hard to choose between soaking in the sun, enjoying an effortless bird’s eye view, and coming down to hobnob with the mortals, in the city’s famous hustle-and-bustle…
