What with all the havoc wrecked on Central Park by the weather these past few days, some might doubt the calmness that they’d have assumed inherent in owning a home around here. However, seasons come and go, and a flat like this one you’ll see featured below isn’t just any old port in a storm. Conceived by interior designer Shawn Henderson, this New York gem looks ideal as a haven from rain or hale, or even just the din of the metropolis. The calm-conducive woody hues are so prevalent they drown out anything that might be going on outside, muting it all except for a glorious, breathtaking skyline that opens up in its zigzagging fullness behind a pleated gauzy curtain and a few floor-to-ceiling window panes in the living room.

Out of Shawn Henderson’s homepage, promise, what really stands out as visible to even the amateur’s eye in the case of this NYC flat is the “harmonious spaces” part. Everything here feels touched by the same hand, a hand secure in its knowledge of, first and foremost, colors, apportioning space and contemporary furniture styles. Creams and light browns dovetail throughout the pad, which, together with the subtle curves and plushy, inviting upholstery, exude a sense of light-hearted coziness that one would think hard to come by in bustling Manhattan.

The study is sedate without losing that homey draw you immediately get from a healthy splash of wood motifs. Also knee-jerk is the ear-to-ear grin prompted by the visuals in the children’s rooms: the paisley bubblegum wallpaper as well as the egg-shaped hanging chair scream out – or rather, daintily whisper – girlish innocence, while the baseball-themed armchair-and-throw-cushion set in the little boy’s room is well-matched by one of the very few instances of daring color-blocking in the NYC flat.
